Canine Companions for Independence

Canine Companions for Independence Testimonial

Canine Companions for Independence® is grateful for the generosity of Land of the Free Foundation in supporting our veterans who come home from battle with physical and emotional injuries. Your investment in our organization makes it possible to provide independence, healing, and joy to so many veterans awaiting their new “battle buddy.”
It is your generosity that helps make these human/canine partnerships a reality, and we cannot thank you enough for your incredible commitment to Canine Companions.

Sincerely,
Marcell Mallette, Executive Director

About

Canine Companions for Independence® is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that enhances the lives of people with disabilities by providing expertly trained assistance dogs and ongoing support to ensure quality partnerships. We provide our dogs and support services free of charge to recipients.

Canine Companions recognizes the urgent and growing need for programs that provide support to veterans with disabilities. Many of the brave men and women returning home from combat with disabling injuries experience a litany of new challenges. With the increase in military veterans returning with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), in 2018 Canine Companions launched a program to directly place service dogs with veterans with PTSD.

Dogs are trained in tasks including anxiety and nightmare interruption, turning on lights, retrieving items, and supporting their handler in crowded public situations that might provoke anxiety for individuals with PTSD.

Beyond much-needed physical assistance, the love, loyalty and positivity of a canine partner can make a profound, lasting impact on someone dealing with difficult emotions that are hard to communicate.
